A letter from an adopter

I rescued my first dog when I was 20 years old. I am 67 now and have had been lucky

to have shared my life with a total of 17 dogs and 4 cats, all of them rescues. Many

were middle aged or elderly or palliative or two of those things at the same time. Only a

couple of puppies and young dogs were in that group.

I have also done my fair share of rescuing and rehoming cats and dogs. Between my

own forever pets and those I've rehomed, I have been on both ends of many rescue

groups/organizations. I have seen the worst and the best.

Home At Last is utterly the best rescue group I have encountered in my 47 years of

rescue and general pet ownership. Two of my dogs in the last 5 years have come from Home At Last. Upon application to adopt one of their dogs, I underwent an extensive vetting of my home, my pet care history, my veterinary history, my lifestyle, my yard environment and my dog knowledge. It was with great enjoyment that I experienced this 'checking up on me' before it was decided whether or not I was capable and able to care for a new dog in my life, often ones with

complicated issues and backgrounds. I was thrilled to see the intensity of Home At Last's questions and expectations of myself in the care of the potential new dog. I remember thinking "This is the way every rescue group should vet the people wanting to home a dog or to rehome a dog. This is the way it should be done. This kind of love and care and attention should be the way it's done."

Home At Last never cuts corners. It asks the difficult questions. And it is both clear and transparent regarding expectations and obligations. And it is always clear that the

animal and its needs comes first. Home At Last is a beacon of light in the complicated and layered world of animal rescue.
